Crisis Assessment Prevention Intervention Services
CAPIS supports individuals with developmental disabilities and their families when behavior, stress, or mental health needs create instability at home, school, or in the community. The program focuses on crisis prevention, stabilization, and building lasting skills so families feel more confident and capable in managing difficult situations.
When a referral is made to CAPIS, staff partner with the individual and their support network to develop a practical, individualized plan centered on safety, emotional regulation, and problem-solving. Supports are flexible and can shift as needs change.
CAPIS services may include:
- 24-hour telephone crisis support for immediate concerns
- Short-term crisis counseling and stabilization during periods of heightened stress
- One-on-one consultation with a behaviorist or social worker
- Guidance to understand and reduce challenging behaviors using trauma-informed and evidence-informed strategies
- Family coaching and skill-building to strengthen day-to-day coping and communication
- Caregiver and parent support groups to reduce isolation and share effective strategies
- Parent education and workshops focused on behavior, emotional regulation, and crisis prevention
- Collaboration with existing providers, schools, and service teams to improve coordination of care
- Targeted information and referrals when additional clinical or community supports would be helpful
