Volunteer /Internship Opportunities
A Community With Caring Is A Community With Hope

Do you have some time available?  Would you like to make a positive difference in your community?  Mental Health Association in Orange County, Inc. has a variety of volunteer opportunities available, providing Orange County residents with free mental health services.  If you are able to spare one hour per week, several hours a month or have scattered days available to help, Mental Health Association can find the perfect spot for you.  It is possible to work from your own home in some cases.  To explore any of these opportunities , please contact the Community Relations Manager at (845) 342-2400 ext. 1236. Administration- To assist with the diversity of clerical work, in order to help the Director's of the agency to provide services to our consumers.  Typing letters, memo's, reports, expediting in coming in outgoing mail, compile information for our fundraisers, answering and directing phone calls etc.  In conjunction with other clerical staff, we strive for efficiency in a very active clerical department.

Compeer - Compeer offers excellent volunteer and internship positions to people and students in the Orange County Community.  Currently, there are several volunteer positions available and one internship position available.  The volunteer positions ask that 4 hours each month be spent being a friend to a person in the community who is suffering with a serious and persistent mental illness.  Internship positions ask that students spend a minimum of 5 hours per week, in office, assisting the program coordinator in recruitment of volunteers, monthly newsletter, statistics, organizing social programs and other projects.

CAPIS- Crisis Assessment and Prevention Intervention Services) - Information, linkage and crisis intervention and prevention services for individuals with developmental disabilities and their families. Provides parent support groups, advocacy, life planning assistance, benefits counseling, and educational seminars.

Fundraising-  Throughout the year, MHA holds a variety of fundraising events.  Most of these are quite labor intensive, and could really use an extra hand.  If you have a few days available to share, please give us a call.

HelpLine- Available 24 hours a day as a crisis intervention, information and referral telephone service that is anonymous and confidential.  Volunteers undergo training in a myriad of personal, emotional and social issues.  Volunteer shifts are flexible, with at-home or in-office schedules available.  Whether a caller is in need of a referral to a self-help group, private practitioner or agency, or whether a person just needs to talk, Helpline is there to assist people in Orange County.

Home to Stay-  Home-to-Stay is  a program sponsored by the Mental Health Association, Rehabilitation Support Services and the Alliance for the Mentally Ill.  The purpose of this innovative project is to provide permanent housing and support services to persons with psychiatric disabilities who have been unsuccessful in traditional mental health residential programs due to multiple service needs.  Services include six subsidized apartments in one building, seven-day a week on-site case management, financial management, recreational activities, transportation, life skills training and medication supervision.  Intern's will have an opportunity to work with case managers and program residents assisting in therapeutic  interest in crisis assessment and service planning to develop a clinical understanding of each resident and their individualized service needs.

Hudson House- Hudson House is a psychosocial clubhouse program, which focuses on socialization, recreation, education, and employment of individual's with mental illnesses.  Volunteer functions include but are not limited to helping to prepare lunches, assisting with craft projects, reading books to members, helping in thrift store, and chaperoning field trips.  Interns are also welcome in the fall and spring semesters.  Interns shadow Hudson House staff and are included in all aspects of the daily work routine.  This includes case management, job coaching/development, and all scheduled daily program activities.

Invisible Children's Project- The Invisible Children's Project is a nationally recognized program that originated in Orange County.  Volunteers are always welcome and appreciated in the Invisible Children's Project.  Volunteers function as assistants during social functions and children's art therapy.  Volunteers also provide and help distribute food and gifts during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Season.  Volunteers are also used in conjunction with the Windslow Therapeutic Riding Academy during our children's horseback riding program.  Interns are welcome at the Invisible Children's Project during the spring and summer semesters.  Interns function as shadows for case managers and are included in all aspects of the work.  This includes home visits, community out-reaches, crisis interventions, training's, and all scheduled program activities.  Interns have access to all programs literature and client files.  Interns are encouraged to ask questions and participate to a level they feel comfortable with.

Rape Crisis Service-   Available 24 hours a day, volunteer advocates are trained to accompany sexual assault survivors to the hospital emergency rooms, police stations and courthouses.  Advocates attend to the needs of the survivor, intervening with the service providers when necessary, as well as answer to the questions or concerns of co-survivors who may be with him/her.  This program created the supportive link between survivor and the other community professional that serves to ensure positive interactions through the treatment and reporting process.
